The stories of the struggles that our mothers and fathers, grandparents and great grandparents went through to get to this country are heartbreaking. Immigration to the United States for opportunity, freedom, and religious tolerance has shaped all of our family’s traditions, our identities, and values. The lesson that we have learned from immigrant history is that this is country of opportunity where everyone can be welcomed regardless of where you come from—that is what makes us uniquely American.
In the recent debates on immigration policy, those simple values that most of us grew up with seem to be missing from the debate. Did your great grandmother stow away on a ship from Germany with money in her pocket so that she could pay the “legal status” fee when she arrived? I don’t think so. Did your grandfather speak English before he left Italy? I know he didn’t. In fact, their insistence on speaking their language at home was legendary. Like many people who arrive everyday from Haiti, Cambodia, Guatemala, Ghana, and other countries, world conflicts and failed economic policies put them in a position to make the very frightening choice to travel to strange country on the chance that maybe he or she would have a future without poverty and suffering. DreamOrphans is calling for art focusing in immigration and its joys and evil.
All artwork should be submitted electronically via email in jpeg format. Submission is free. Deadline for submissions is July 15 – 2010.
The phenomenon of the female homicides in Ciudad Juárez, called in Spanish the feminicidios (“femicides“) and las muertas de Juárez (“The dead women of Juárez”), involves the violent deaths of hundreds of women since 1993 in the northern Mexican city of Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua, a border city across the Rio Grande from the U.S. city of El Paso, Texas. The estimated homicide toll is speculated by authorities to be about 400 but many local residents believe that the true count of los feminicidios stands at an estimated 5,000 victims. Most of the cases remained unsolved as of 2003, and are still unsolved today.
